NOS AÎNÉS NE NOUS AVAIENT PAS TOUT DIT !
Réflexions sur une performance de Jean-Marie Grudé qui a lieu dans les locaux de Bureaux & Services, 3, avenue René Laennec, Le Mans et intitulée : L’automobile sportive… de la photographie à l’interprétation numérique.
La découverte d’une peinture datée de 44 000 ans sur l’Ile de Sulawesi repousse de 10 000 ans la naissance de l’art.
Qu’elle est loin l’époque où la généalogie de l’art se résumait à un chêne dont chaque rameau incarnait un mouvement bien distinct. Nous avons dorénavant affaire à un énorme buisson composé de centaines de branches totalement impénétrables.
La seconde expo de Jean-Marie Grudé vient se nicher dans ce buisson apparemment impénétrable dans sa discipline : la photographie ; art traversé par une inquiétude. Les critiques d’art venus après l’immense Jean-Claude Lemagny soulignaient, pas plus tôt qu’en 2014 : La photographie, un art en transition. Inquiétude conséquente à la révolution numérique et de l’entrée de la photographie dans l’ère dite post-photographique de l’image omniprésente et indifférenciée. Situation implicitement connotée dans le titre de ce travail.
Eh bien, avec cette « performance » de Jean-Marie Grudé, nous voici en plein dans la marmite. Travail massivement antinomique de celui réalisé dans une exposition se tenant à Coulaines à l’Herberie. Un mot de cette forme plus « contemporaine » : un travail constant, rectiligne, pugnace, une recette technique fruit d’une recherche personnelle. Voilà pour la « mise en place ». Le tout frappé au coin d’une très belle tenue de tirage, inévitablement traversée par les canons de la « mode » de l’impressions sur toile que semble affectionner l’auteur, (à une exception près, un acrylique d’une magnifique facture), ici judicieusement utilisée puisque militant avec l’intention graphique de l’auteur. Nous voici dans une photographie qui oscille dans cette sorte d’entre-deux entre l’art de la bande dessinée et l’art graphique. Très graphique.
Il se dit que nous sommes entrés dans l’ère » de la « post-photographie » semblant résister à toute tentative de définition. À propos du style employé, sommes-nous à un moment de l’histoire de la photographie, une nouvelle condition de l’image à l’ère du numérique ou plus simplement sur ce qui anime les pratiques de la photographie artistique d’aujourd’hui ?
Ces dernières années ont vu l’émergence d’une génération d’artistes qui, inspirés par le modernisme et les avant-gardes américaines, remettent en question le paradigme de la reproduction, essentiel à la définition de la photographie.
Fascinante, la photographie possède encore un pouvoir d’attraction et de ravissement d’une efficacité redoutable. Non plus uniquement grâce à ses propriétés techniques d’enregistrement et de reproduction, mais surtout par la résistance qu’elle oppose à toute définition fixe du réel comme d’elle-même. Jamais stable, la photographie a toujours été un objet en flux, depuis les premières expérimentations de captation optiques, de copie mécanique ou de fixation chimique. De nature technologique elle se modifie au fur et à mesure des avancées.
Peu sensibles à l’Index ou au punctum, les photographes nouveaux ont tiré davantage d’enseignements des théories modernistes du Bauhaus ainsi que du conceptualisme et du minimalisme américains ; les spécificités du medium ne sont plus activées que pour démystifier ses usages traditionnels de classification et de déterminisme. Détournées, elles servent, ici par exemple, de réflexion sur les conditions de réappropriation symbolique de territoires personnels, pour Jean-Marie Grudé et hic et nunc : l’automobile. Territoire dans lequel il souligne être le plus à l’aise.
Cela oriente ma réflexion vers une interrogation sur la validité du sujet photographique et les conséquences politiques et sociales de sa présence. Ces pratiques court-circuitent toute tentative de catégorisation traditionnelle par médium : ainsi présentées sous forme d’installation ces images matérialisent une insaisissable rébellion des codes.
Certains auteurs disent que la post-photographie serait l’agent d’une transgression : la possibilité de réaliser des photos qui n’ont pas été prises dans le passé. Susan Sontag, avait remarquablement mis en évidence combien la photographie est d’essence nostalgique, transformant le présent en passé. Mais on peut faire en sorte de lui attribuer une autre charge encore, remettre en jeu, comme ici, des fragments d’un ordre disparu et observer le tremblement qui en résulte. On peut penser que ce tremblement serait indice de vérité, une sorte de conscience qui aurait décroché des choses et des sensations. Une photographie d’après-coup. Une nouvelle matérialité émerge alors qui est de l’ordre de la permission : est-il permis de retourner dans le passé, pour y créer de nouvelles correspondances ? C’est également ce que disait Susan Sontag de ces « dérives » (à l’époque de ces écrits sa compagne était une photographe célèbre[1]) : « une façon nouvelle d’avoir commerce avec le temps ». Au total, et s’il n’est pas incongru de citer à nouveau Susan Sontag : « La force des images photographiques tient à leur statut de réalités matérielles, à ce qu’elles sont le limon riche en information que laisse dans son sillage l’objet qui les a émises, un puissant moyen de retrouver l’avantage contre la réalité, de la transformer en ombre à son tour[2] ».
